Saleemul Huq’s ranking is the highest for an environmental science researcher located in Bangladesh

Saleemul Huq, the Director of the International Centre for Climate Change and  Development (ICCCAD) and professor at the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) has been ranked amongst the world’s top 2% scientists in the environmental sciences category.

Huq has been positioned in the 1,324th position among 66,925 scientists ranked in the ‘Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators’. Professor John Ioannidis of Stanford University worked alongside US-based Kevin W Boyack and the Netherlands-based Jeroen Baas to release the comprehensive list of 1,59,683 scientists of numerous disciplines.

The database is the first of its kind and was introduced in August of last year. This year it was released with some updates incorporated.

The updated analyses use citations from Scopus with data freeze from May 6, 2020, evaluating scientists for career-long citation impact up until the end of 2019, and also for citation impact during the single calendar year 2019.

Saleemul Huq’s ranking in the category of environmental science is the highest for an environmental science researcher located in Bangladesh.

Apart from being the Director at the ICCCAD, Huq is also an Associate of the International Institute on Environment and Development (IIED) in the United Kingdom, as well as the Chair of the Expert Advisory Group for the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), and Senior Adviser on Locally Led Adaptation with Global Centre on Adaptation (GCA) headquartered in the Netherlands.

Huq is an expert in adaptation to climate change in the most vulnerable developing countries and has been a lead author of the third, fourth and fifth assessment reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and he also advises the Least Developed Countries (LDC) group in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The ranking system is widely acknowledged amongst peers and considered to be highly prestigious. The database analyzes the impact made by researchers during their careers and is published in the journal PLoS Biology.
