Christopher Smith

Visiting Researcher

Christopher_Smith_Photo Christopher is a Research Fellow (Geography) in the School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex, UK. He holds a Ph.D from the University of Sussex and was previously a Visiting Scientist at the University of Sydney, Australia. Christopher is currently visiting ICCCAD as part of the ‘Migrants on the Margins’ project, the Royal Geographical Society’s three year Field Research Programme that seeks to understand situations where internal migration (rural-urban or urban-urban) does/does not lead to livelihood success. In addition to visiting ICCCAD, the collaborative field element of the project will see Christopher collaborating with research partners in Sri Lanka, Somaliland and Zimbabwe. Christopher’s past and current research explores the potential for migration to serve as a route out of poverty, focusing specifically on situations where people may become ‘trapped’ in places where they have no recourse to either improve their situation in that location or move to another.
